The S2 Standard 22 from Paul Reed Smith is an example of the celebrated company’s bare bones, workhorse guitars for every player. S2 Series guitars are made with the same attention and craftsmanship as their higher end electric models but with a simpler offering of finishes and appointments.
At first appearance, this model is most definitely a PRS guitar, boasting its ever distinguishable signature double cutaway design. The body of the S2 Standard 22 is solid Mahogany with a high-gloss nitrocellulose finish. It comes loaded with PRS’s 58/15 LT “S” pickups. The LT in the model title stands for “Low Turn”, which means the pickups have fewer wraps than PRS’ standard 58/15 pickup, resulting in slightly lower output and scooped midrange.
Via a push/pull tone control, the S2’s 58/15 LT “S” pickups allow for split-coil options, offering a spankier, glassier tone than in full dual coil mode. In this mode, only the inside coils of either pickup are activated. A 3-way blade style pickup selector switches between bridge pickup, neck pickup, or both pickups on simultaneously.
Other key features of the S2 Standard 22 include a set Mahogany neck carved to PRS’ “Pattern Regular” profile, Rosewood fingerboard with 10″ radius, 22 frets, and 25″ scale length.
The S2 Standard 22 also comes equipped with two very high quality PRS features: A PRS Patented Locking tremolo and PRS Low-Mass Locking Tuners, ensuring intonation and a comfortable playing experience.
Especially if you are a working musician looking for a reliable, versatile, and sharply dressed instrument – or if you are looking for PRS playability at a more affordable price point, check out the S2 Standard 22.
